The composer-conductor is considered to be a 19th century bred new kind of musician, as exemplified by Felix Mendelssohn and Richard Wagner amongst others. These were men of autocratic and creative character who assumed full control over performance and brought to their work a single-minded creative viewpoint and a cultivated sensitivity that was a hallmark of much of the 19th-century period in music. This paved the way to other dynamic composers like Richard Strauss and Benjamin Britten who continued the tradition of their predecessors with flair and ingenuity.
