Matthew Fenech started his music education at age seven, with Mro Carmelo Callus, and later with Guido Mamo and Tatjana Chirchop at the Johann Strauss School of Music. In 2000 he completed the Bachelor of Arts with Honours at the University of Malta, specialising in Musicology.

He has since participated in various masterclasses, including ones with Eva Steinschaden, violin professor at Salzburg Mozarteum. In 2001 he joined the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra as part-time violinist, eventually joining permanently as viola player in 2008.

The MPO gave Fenech the opportunity to perform under the direction of many renowned conductors and to appear in important concert halls around Europe, China and USA. Since 2010 he has also been the librarian of the MPO.
