presented by Gaulitana: A Festival of Music GIUSEPPE RECCHIA Clarinet Programme to include: Carl Maria von Weber Variationen über ein Thema aus Silvana, Op.33 The chamber concert as part of GauLive showcases the clarinet’s virtuosity. Aptly, the opening work was dedicated to one of the most-renowned stars of the time, Heinrich Baerman – a personal friend of Weber. Rossini’s rarely performed Fantasia is imbued with references to the Italian operatic style as the programme also features a short yet intensive work by Maltese composer Joseph Vella, who penned a number of oeuvres for the instrument. The recital concludes with the Rigoletto Fantasia, underling a common trend in the 19th century to transport opera to instrumental concerts, and a masterpiece of the clarinet repertoire by Poulenc, intrinsically French with contrasting moods mirroring the turbulent personality of the composer.
