Jacques-François Gallay Grand Quatuor, Op. 26

Gallay was a virtuoso horn soloist who performed in a refined and limpid manner, famous for blending the different colours of open and stopped notes on the instrument. He was also appointed professor at the Paris Conservatoire in 1842, holding the post for 22 years.

The Grand Quatour, with movements written in different keys, showcases a wide array of timbres whilst utilising a wide tessitura. Dedicated to eminent Italian opera composer Gioachino Rossini with whom Gallay maintained a cordial relationshipit underlines the latter’s conviction that “the best school for an instrumentalist was that of a good singer”.
