Ludwig van Beethoven Rondino in E-flat major, WoO 25
Charles Gounod Petite Symphonie

The concert features two works from the wind repertoire.

Both Beethoven and Gounod most likely used the Mozart Serenades (Octets) as models for their own works since both are devoid of any over romanticism and are clear in structure. The Beethoven Rondino of 1793 may have been originally intended as a movement for his own Octet and was only published after his death in 1830.

The Petite Symphonie written almost a century after the Rondino at the request of Paul Taffanel adds one flute to the standard octet. This four-movement piece is concise with a beautiful slow second movement.
