Joseph Vella’s symphony The Apocalypse Verses, originally commissioned to honour St George on the 17th century of his martyrdom, was written during the winter months of 2002/3.
Vella’s leitmotiv running through his work – which was premiered on July 14, 2003 – can be considered to be that of the eternal triumph of good over evil, so well illustrated and expressed in the story of the life and deeds of, St George. This becomes evident in the Biblical text that Vella crystallizes in the concluding movement of his composition, scored for a tenor solo representing Saint John the Evangelist, together with both an SSA and an SATB chorus at various stages representing the Angels and the Saints.
